The SU Woordfees 2018

 By Chloe Carelse

This year Stellenbosch hosted the woordfees for its 11th consecutive year. Celebrating visual art, music, theatre and literature, a large number of students have found themselves missing classes to see the various productions and exhibitions on offer.

Artists such as Jeremy Loops and Micasa as well as performances such as that of Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman and Amanda Strydom in collaboration with the Stellenbosch University Jazz band drew in the crowds.

Restaurants and bars were transformed into temporary stages and the streets of Stellenbosch weren’t only buzzing with students but with all lovers of art.

The programme for the Woordfees 2018 was filled to the brim. With performances by university students and artist still trying to make a name for themselves, selling out just as well as well-established artists’ acts. In fact, one of the shows that I went to go see, an original production of the universities drama department, had a girl outside beg me to sell her my ticket.

And, these performances weren’t only reserved for those who could afford them. In celebration with their 100th birthday, the University launched their 100 gifts initiative. Which allowed the community members to also join in on the cultural experience.

The Woordfees was a beautiful celebration of art in all its forms for all people.
