Black Girl Magic Meets Sisterhood At #ForBlackGirlsOnly Picnic

On Sunday, January 31st, all roads led to Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, where #ForBlackGirlsOnly picnic was held; the same place where many years ago, Black women converged demanding their human rights (What a time to be alive?!). The title of the event was very clear. The gathering saw Black women in all their fierceness and flyness wearing all black, with books written by Black Women.

The #ForBlackGirlsOnly gathering was founded and organised by Sivu Siwisa as a platform dubbed  "A safe space apologetically centering Black Women. Events, stories, support, resources, news, lots of love." Some of the recognizable faces in attendance include Simphiwe Dana, Lebo MashilePumla Dineo Gqola, Thandiswa Mazwai to name a few. If photos are anything to go by, it was a fun event that trended on twitter with videos and some memorable quotes we couldn't help but share:

"Mass media NOT ALLOWED at #ForBlackGirlsOnly Jo'burg. Black women will write their own stories." - For Black Girls Only

"We are the daughters and grand daughters of the witches they didn't burn." - Pontsho Pilane

"There is something threatening about black girls meeting like this." - Panashe Chigumadzi

"#ForBlackGirlsOnly is our political home!" -  Sivu Siwisa

Awwww, Simphiwe Dana and her daughter. She captioned this, "She's the main reason I'm here."

Black Women also offered money for the event to continue its mission.

Looking forward to the Cape Town edition of #FBGO. Yes, the pressure is on. Also us in the Mothercity deserve such nice things you know *side eyes Sivu* Don't you just love how the young girls were welcome to be part of the event?
