Finding Fela is a documentary about the life and music of legendary Nigerian artist, human rights activist (through his music), Fela Kuti.
As one of Nigeria's most influential musician, the Broadway musical was only right to tell the story of a man whose influence helped shape Nigeria from the country's turbulent times. He was an agent for change, using music as a tool to liberate Nigeria into a democratic nation.
The documentary is directed by renowned American documentary filmmaker, Alex Gibney and co-produced by Okayafrica, Jigsaw Productions and Knitting Factory Entertainment.
After a successful Broadway showcase which earned it 11 Tony Award nominations and three awards for Best Choreography, Best Costume Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical in 2010.
The documentary also featured at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014 where it received sold-out screenings.
Finding Fela has been acquired for distribution in North America. It will be the first Broadway show to play in Africa with its original cast.
It is almost 17 years since Fela Kuti's death but he remains prominent on the continent and internationally as his music lives on and continues to inspire many African artists.
