Somali Actor Barkhadi Abdi Scoops BAFTA For Best Supporting Actor

Last night, Sunday 16th February saw the gathering of actors for the British Academy Film Awards 2014 with Somali actor Barkhadi Abdi scooping an award in the Best Support Actor category for his role in Captain Phillips. Abdi won against Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Daniel Bruhl (Rush), Matt Damon (Behind The Candelabra) and Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave).

12 Years A Slave British-Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor also walked away as Leading Actor beating Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Christian Bale (American Hustle) Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips).

Our Kenyan Hollywood 'It Girl' Lupita Nyong'o didn't win and obviously I'm devastated by that. Hopefully she's going to win an Oscar, fingers crossed for you my Miss Nyong'o.

Watch his acceptance speech:

Congratulations Barkhadi Abdi! You're surely doing Somalia and Africa proud. His story is an inspirational one coming from a driver to Hollywood starlet and now award winner. It goes to show we all start somewhere. Never Give up!!!
