Press Release: Mafikizolo & Davido To Take Centre Stage At the MTV Africa Music Awards 2014






The MTV Africa Music Awards are the talk of town. Come 7 June, all roads will lead to Durban for another celebration of African music but until then, more announcements continue to surface regarding the most anticipated music award show on the continent.

MTV Base released the following statement today.

MTV Base is setting the tone for its flagship global celebration of African contemporary music and achievement, as Mafikizolo and Davido are revealed as the first performers at the MTV Africa Music Awards KwaZulu-Natal supported by Absolut & The City of Durban (MAMA).

Nigerian sensation Davido and electrifying South African Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo are both tied withUhuru as the most nominated artists in this year’s MAMA, notching up 4 nominations each, and going directly head-to-head in Song of the YearArtist of the Year and Best Collaboration. Additionally,Davido is nominated for Best Male, while Mafikozolo leads the contenders in Best Group. 

Celebrating musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African youth culture throughout the year, MAMA 2014 takes place at the ICC, Durban, South Africa on Saturday 7 June.  For the first time ever, the awards  is premiering LIVE across Africa on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) andMTV (DStv Channel 130) at 21:00 CAT. 

The 2014 awards are set to feature stunning performances from African and international artists, including the awards’signature collaborations between artists of different genres and cultures – a high point of every show. In this year’s newly introduced lifestyle award categories, Chimamanda Adiche, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Trevor Noah, Lupita Nyong’o and Yaya Toure are nominated for Personality of the YearClarence Peters, Leti Arts, Rasty and Anisa Mpungwe are nominated in Transform Today by Absolut.  The nominees for the MTV Base Leadership award and Best International are still to be revealed.
